'What sports does Vietnam play and how do they contribute to our Australian society?'
Jianzi is the national sport of Vietnam. In this game, teams of 1 or 2 use their feet to kick a shuttlecock over a net. It is a combination of badminton, volleyball and football. Jianzi is played mostly in the capital Hanoi, but is played practically everywhere in Vietnam. Football is the most popular sport in Vietnam. Sports and games such as badminton, tennis, ping pong, and chess are also popular with large segments of the population playing sports. The Vietnamese are also very good at ‘Vovinam’ which is a martial arts sport. The founder of this sport was Nguyễn Lộc. Vovinam uses force and reaction of the opponent. Vovinam also includes using hand, elbow, kicks, escape and levering techniques. Both attack and defense techniques are trained, as well as forms, combat and traditional wrestling. The wide range of techniques include punching, kicking etc. as well as forms, wrestling and sword combat. Women’s Volleyball is extremely popular and is watched by large sections of the country. Vietnam has participated in the Olympic Games since 1952, however did not with their first medal until Tran Hieu Ngan claimed a silver medal in the women’s tae kwon do at the 2000 Olympic Games. 'What has Vietnam contributed to the Australian sporting society?' 1. They have brought many traditional sports which has had an influence in making a multi-cultural sporting society. 2. It will give more people more variety to choose from traditional sports which the Vietnamese have influenced in our society. 3. People learn Vietnamese words that you would not have known. 4. People would pursue studies knowing that Vietnamese sports are very popular and study about its cultures Conclusion Vietnam has given us a wide range of sports to choose which mad us a multi-cultural country in the sporting area. This impacts our society in a large manner. After knowing that Vietnam has a huge range of sports, people would think twice and might pursue playing a Vietnamese sport.
