Rationale
Vietnam is a country located in South–East Asia. Before the Vietnamese people immigrated to Australia, they led happy lives where some families were richer while others lived in poverty.
Vietnam was a United, Democratic country. However, after the Vietnamese war Vietnam became communist. A man, named Ho Chi Minh who lived in the North of Vietnam, proposed that Vietnam should be communist. The people in the South rejected this statement and a war broke out. The Australian and other Western Forces backed the South Vietnamese. The Vietnamese Communist had defeated the Western Forces. After the war Australia decided to accept Vietnamese refugees. They thought it was partially their responsibility to allow the Vietnamese refugees a better home. Also the Australians thought that it was also their fault that the communist forces took over.
During the war many refugees left Vietnam for a safe haven. This haven turned out to be Australia. One of the refugees that left is a famous comedian named Anh Do. He came illegally with his family. They were processed like many other Vietnamese and were finally granted residency.
Another reason why Vietnamese to came to Australia is that previous Australian Immigration Minister Grassby declared Australia a multi – cultural society. All former racist standards had been abolished. If people met the correct criteria they were allowed to stay in Australia.
By 1975 roughly 1000 Vietnamese were living in Australia. 537 of them were orphans, but only some of them were adopted. 465 of the refugees were students on limited visas. In 2001, there were approximately 150 000 Vietnamese people that were living in Australia. Vietnamese immigration to Australia occurred in 3 major waves. The largest wave was made up of refugees fleeing South Vietnam in the 4 years following the end of the Vietnamese war in 1975. Many of these refugees travelled illegally on ill – equipped boats to Australia. The majority of refugees were accepted. Once in Australia they faced many difficulties. The Australian culture and way of life was new and very different. It also didn’t help that Australians did not know much of the Vietnamese way of life. However, programs were provided to help newcomers learn English and also find jobs.
These are the reasons why immigration from Vietnam to Australia was facilitated.
